Vancouver Island Birding & Nature Discoveries
Adventure Awaits

In this unique area known as Lighthouse Country, one can find habitat along the shores, the many streams, creeks and rivers, in the forests and agricultural fields supporting approximately three hundred species of birds that either reside here year-round, take up residence during particular seasons of the year or stop by for feed and rest during their long migrations.

Significant Wintering & Migratory Area

Chrome IslandLighthouse Country, overlooking the Straits of Georgia and named after the lighthouses on neighbouring Chrome Island and Sisters Island, is located on the east coast of central Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It consists of the small villages of Qualicum Bay, Bowser and the protected harbour of Deep Bay where thousands of scoters and other marine birds spend their winters.

This area is part of Baynes Sound, an Internationally noted Important Bird Area (IBA), and is directly adjacent to Lambert Channel-Hornby Island Waters IBA. These two areas represent one of the most significant areas for wintering and migratory waterbirds in British Columbia.

Incredible Spectacle

Birding at Nile CreekFor those who have not visited the west coast of North America, you will find resident birds here that are found nowhere else in the world, such as the Northwestern Crow, Glaucous-winged Gull, Marbled Murrelet, Hutton's Vireo, Townsend's Warbler, Bewick's Wren, Steller's Jay, Black Scoter, Harlequin Duck and many more; for everyone, there will be birds you have enjoyed before and new sightings to add to your list.

During the winter months, the fall salmon spawn and the early spring herring spawn, the plethora of bird and other wildlife is an incredible spectacle one should not miss.

Beginning in the spring and throughout the summer, the forests fill with song birds, and shorebirds build in abundance. Of course, most of the year, the area enjoys our most notable species, the Bald Eagle and Great Blue Heron with their many nests and rookeries.

Rewarding Experience

Our dedicated staff looks forward to sharing our area's birds, its other wildlife and this beautiful setting, and making your bird-watching experience rewarding and memorable.
