Lighthouse Country is well-known for its rich history and Native culture, wildlife and scenic beauty, and wealth of outdoor recreational opportunities. But did you know that it is also home base for North America’s only PACIFIC SCALLOP farming industry? |
In 1989, Island Scallops established a scallop hatchery in Qualicum Bay and since then has pioneered the development of scallop farming in BC. |
Scallop seed is produced in the hatchery and reared in the ocean in small nets attached to submerged horizontal lines.
Scallops feed themselves by filtering the natural microscopic food, and the whole cycle from hatchery to harvest takes about 18 months |
Scallop farming is a “green” industry and cultured PACIFIC SCALLOPS are a healthy food choice. Buy them fresh in the shell – complete with their own baking dish and serving container! |
